Call For Expression Of Interest To Submit Case Studies To A Special Issue Of PARKS On ‘Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures’

See Read More for details.

In the context of the work of the IUCN WCPA Task Force on Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), a special issue of PARKS containing case studies of potential OECMs will be published in advance of the 22nd meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Subsidiary Body on Science, Technology and Technological Advice (July 2017). Each case study will be of a potential OECM using the draft IUCN Guidelines on Recognising and Reporting OECMs (NB: while the areas should be ‘likely’ OECMs when considered against the criteria, you are not expected to give a categorical answer about the area’s status).

Selection of case studies will be a two-stage process.

  1. Expressions of interest: We request 500 word expressions of interest that provide a synopsis for the proposed case study, including details of the area’s biodiversity, governance, management, and relevant ecosystem to assist the selection of a representative range of papers. Successful authors will be invited to produce a paper for submission.
  2. Submission of papers: Papers will be submitted and reviewed (maximum 4,000 words, not including endnotes and references). Those meeting the required standards will be asked to revise their drafts based on reviewers’ comments for subsequent publication.

The timeline for the special issue is as follows:

  • 15 January: Submission of expressions of interest.
  • 1 February: Announcement of the outcomes of the selection process
  • 15 March: Submission of selected case studies.
  • 1 April: Reviewers’ comments to authors.
  • 1 May: Final submission of papers.
